Thinking of Renting a Flat or a House? 6 Questions to Ask Before You Move In
Posted by: Admin / Category: GeneralIf you’re looking to rent a house or a rent a flat, you’re not alone. According to BBC World News, rental properties are becoming more and more popular. However, if you want to get a place that’s right for you, there are 6 questions you need to ask before you say, “I’ll take it!”
1. Does the property have any structural issues?
First and foremost, you need to make sure that the building is completely safe for you to live in and that it complies with all local codes. After that, though, there are still some issues that could make you pass. For example, if the pipes leak or if the windows are drafty, it can mean spending lots of extra money on utilities.
If you really like the property, talk to the landlord about fixing any issues before you move in. The worst he can say is no, and you’ll have to keep searching.
2. How much does everything cost?
When you’re setting up your budget, you can’t just consider the rent payment. You will also need to estimate how much your utilities will cost. The property manager may be able to give you a general idea when you tour the property. And, don’t forget – you will have to calculate how far your rental flat is from work, so that you’ll know how much you have to spend on gas.
3. How’s the location?
Is the rental property in a safe neighborhood? Will you feel safe coming home late at night?
Or, you may think you’ve found the perfect rental flat – until you realize that it’s going to take you an hour to get to work, or that it’s too far from your family, or that the nearest grocery store is still too far away.
4. Are dogs and cats allowed?
For many pet-lovers, this can make or break a rental deal. After all, you don’t want to make Fido or Fluffy homeless because you can’t have him or her in your new flat. In some parts of time, finding a pet-friendly landlord may be harder than you think.
5. What does the apartment come with?
Does it have all of the appliances that you need? Will you have to go out and buy furniture?
6. What are the contract terms and conditions?
How long is the lease period? Will you get your security deposit back if you leave the flat in good shape? Are there any rules that you have a problem with? Before you sign anything, ask your landlord to clear up any confusion – and always read the fine print to avoid surprises at a later stage.
