Helpful Packing Tips

Its good news–you’re moving home to Boston, or else have found yourself a new home within Boston. A new move in exciting, but it can be a lot of work too. To have the easiest move possible, hire some reputable professional movers to help, and follow these tips:

1) As soon as you know about the move, start going through your stuff, room by room. Throw out, sell or give away anything you don’t expect to use in your new home. Immediately pack away items you won’t need before the move.

2) Organization is your key to sanity once you get there. Label every box carefully, with a short description of contents and the room where it belongs.

3) Pack heavy items like books into small boxes. Breakables should go in small to medium sized boxes, carefully wrapped in paper or cloth. Use large boxes for bulky, light items like pillows, comforters or lamps.

4) Think about what should go out the door first. The things at the back of the truck are the things that will come off last at your new home. Anything you are likely to need immediately should go on last.

5) Clearly mark boxes that contain important items, such as bedding and towels so that you can make up your beds and take showers. You’ll want a shower curtain, toiletries, your coffee maker and coffee cups, that sort of thing. You need to think about your first night and first morning, realizing that not everything will get unpacked the first day.

6) Make yourself a count-down list you can use, including things like throwing out old food, defrosting the refrigerator and redirecting your mail. Also start on a list of everyone who needs to know your new address, including friend and family, magazines you subscribe to, and of course the phone company.
